There's a new Bend The Rules Swap going on - this round is a placemat and napkin set.
For everyone who loves sock monkeys, be sure to check out this site devoted entirely to this cuddly critter. Not only can they point you to other sock monkey sites, but there's free patterns and tutorials too. [link via Funky Finds] If monkeys aren't your thing, then be sure to check out Friends of Scotopus where you can buy kits to make your own sock octopus and more (they're also giving away one Deluxe Socktopus during the months of June, July and August). A great tutorial on changing the neckline on a blouse or dress. On a non-sewing related note, her daughter runs the site, Multiple Mayhem, - she has quads plus one all under the age of 4!

About ergonomics - I am still nostalgic for my first sewing machine - a bottom of the line Kenmore which came built-in to a cabinet. Th emachinehad a flat sewing plate back then (no free arms at low prices back then) which allowed it to fit flush in the cabinet for a perfect sewing height. Once free arms became the norm, cabinets essentially disappeared (would have required two levels) and we all started placing our machines on table tops - a bad idea, we came to realize. So now the cabinets are custom and cost extra!
I would ALMOST be willing to give up the free arm feature in return for the wonderful, large, flat, instant sewing surface at the correct height that I used to have.
