A Denim Love Affair

Have you ever made something for someone else and liked it so much you wanted to keep it for yourself? That's what happened yesterday. I decided to get a bit creative and test out a pattern using an old pair of jeans. And this is what's left of them:

I have to admit, denim is on of my favorite fabrics to work with. I love the topstitching possibilities, the durability of the material, and how it feels after a multitude of washes. Now I'm hoping that I have another pair that will yield as much material so I can make a second one for myself today (I would LOVE to show you all the finished project, but that will have to stay under wraps for a bit longer)! So all this thinking about one of my favorite materials makes me curious. What's your favorite denim project?

My favorite denim project was a floor-length, curved-hip-seamed, flaring hem skirt in faded, brushed denim. I made one for myself and one for my sister - after seeing a sample in a fabric store window (Poppy Fabric & Trim, then on Solano Ave in Berkeley). It was the"hippie" era but then we both wore the skirts for years as "hostess" skirts. haha. The cut was sooooo flattering. In a recent visit with my sister she said that was her favorite item I had ever sewn for her.

(I still have mine - waiting for a return of the style and my smaller waistline. haha)

My favorite denim project was one of the first things I ever sewed. I think I still have it somewhere. An over the shoulder tote bag made from a long denim skirt. It had a full flap and the strap was made from the waistband, including the rivet button. I have to see if I can find it.
