Fabric Out, Fabric In

The weather has cooperated the last few days and temperatures have been fairly mild (we won't talk about the 20+ degree dip in temperatures and snow we're having today), so it gave me the opportunity to do something that I've been meaning to get to..... painting a lamp:

The photo on the right is how the lamp started out - white with a while lampshade (boring!). Since the baby's room is decorated in this nursery theme, I decided to paint it the soft green color that appears in the bedding (I did this outside with a NIOSH filter mask). Ahhhh, so much better! So, while the lamp was drying, I headed out to the fabric store.....

Since I had a coupon, I decided to stop by Joann's - little did I know that they were having a clearance sale! I found a black and white knit that I had been eyeing on sale for $3\yard (so I got 2), some gold lame on sale for $1\yard (for upcoming Super Hero Aprons), and some floral home decor fabric (30% off) that I'm intending on using for the Nappy Bag. I also decided on making a trip to Hancock Fabrics (where I also had a coupon) - I purchased a great black, white, and yellow jersey that reminded me of a INC International Concepts dress from last spring (I wish I had a photo to share). Along with it, I found a new embellishment that I can't wait to try.... June Tailor's Jean's Trix iron-on foil sheets.

On the way to the cutting table..... This beautiful horse-bit jersey from Gorgeous Fabrics. I had purchased this fabric some time ago and have been 'saving' it for the right project. I decided yesterday that I needed to add more color to my wardrobe so this will become the short sleeved version of Kwik Sew 3487.

Nice job on transforming the lamp! I love your baby bedding-it is so cute.

Love the knit fabric-can't wait to see another Kwik Sew top. I want to delve into trying to sew some knit tops, what books would you recommend?

Thanks so much! Believe it or not, (especially because I have so many books), I don't have any specific books that are devoted to knits! I have some basic books that discuss tips on working with knits, but that's about it. I am planning on purchasing Wendy Mullin's upcoming book (due out in May) that is everything you needed to know about sewing with knits! If it's anything like her last book, it's going to be a good one to own. I've also heard good things about "Sewing With Knits" book. Most of what I've learned is through trial and error and reading posts and articles on the web.

Stacy, I have two lamps in my living room that need painting, but I've procrastinated for fear of not doing it well (my life story!). Did you spray yours or brush it? Your lamp looks very textured...mine are smoothe and I think I want to make the base white and then wipe yellow (or blue) on it so that it looks a bit antique-y. Advice? (I won't be doing this today..ha-ha!)

The lamp looks so good! Much improved. Can't wait to see the whole nursery! The maternity top you did this past week was darling too. And I have 3 pieces from Ann that I need to sew up!

I have a couple of lamps that are similar to yours and had never considered painting them to give them a fresh new look. So, thanks for the idea!
