Make It Mine

Late last week, the Make It Mine magazine arrived that I won from Sharon's contest. I finally had a chance to really sit down and check it out over the weekend and thought I would share a quick review.

Make It Mine is devoted to embellishing or altering ready made home dec., clothing, and accessories. There are a few sewing projects involved, but many of the 54 articles (yes, 54 ideas!) are devoted to a variety of techniques and mediums. These include decorative bleaching (which I saw a lot of in some junior clothing in stores this weekend), needle felting, Decoupage, using computer programs to alter images, and of course some simple sewing projects. I found several projects that I wanted to give a try - including the bleaching technique, dying a scarf, making a Warhol style image (but I'm thinking of using it in a sewing context - something like this Dwight purse), and transferring images to polymer clay. If you're interested in making your projects more interesting or been thinking of re-purposing some of your new or existing clothing and accessories, then this magazine is a definite must-have!

If you're wanting to find out more about Make It Mine, then be sure to check out their blog and project gallery.

Sounds like a fun magazine. I took a one-session class at G Street Fabircs a few years ago which featured a trunk show of "embellished ready-to-wear" clothes. The teacher (Connie Long) also wrote a book on the subject. She has written several good sewing books and often writes for Threads magazine.

Starting with ready-to-wear clothes is a good way to dip a toe into "sewing". Or to get new clothes out of your old ones.
