Good Intentions

I had good intentions on writtng up a few book reviews today, one for the adorable book that Kathryn sent me, See and Sew and another for Luminous Landscapes: Quilted Visions in Paint and Thread, but my head is throbbing and my throat is so scratchy, I don't think that I can focus long enough to make sense. So, instead, here's all the things that I have on my mind today:

Yesterday I picked up two new magazines - Cutting Edge, Hancock Fabric's sewing magazine (complete with coupons), and Adorn. Adorn reminds me of Craft Magazine, but without the hefty price tag. If you're wanting to check out the magazine, but don't want to subscribe yet - hurry over to their site and fill out the Reader Survey. If you're one of the first 50 people to submit your answers, you could receive a free subscription! After you're done, be sure to check out their blog.

I've finally won some cool sewing prizes! A subscription to Adorn (see above comment on how to try to win yours) and a copy of Vogue Sewing from Cutting Edge magazine! If you have made something from any Cutting Edge issue (I made the Wee Wonderful ornaments) and are one of the first 25 people to submit your photo, you can win your own copy, too. See page 15 of the new issue to find out more.

I've been having a heck of a time with spam lately.... I've closed down comments on several (old, old) threads that seem to be 'targets'. This won't effect commenting on any recent posts.

I forgot to mention, while I was at Needle Nook, I picked up my new favorite notion - a Marvy Fabric Marker. It makes dark purple marks on your fabric and stays until you swipe the 'white' tip over the lines you've made (you can even iron over the purple marks and they don't disappear or become permanent).

Partners were posted for the 1/2 Dozen Fat Quarter Swap. It seems like my partner and I are very well matched - Asian themes and modern prints seems to be her favorite kind of fat quarters too! Needless to say, picking fabrics for this one should be easy - and no crafting involved!

Absolutely nothing to do with sewing, but I can't believe that Anna Nichole Smith died! I didn't expect to hear that yesterday. In fact, Lori and I were chatting (about what else, fabric shopping!) when it was announced and I had to interrupt our conversation to tell her.

An extra, extra-long comment - in hopes of distracting you from your cold/flu thing:

So sorry to hear you are under the weather! I am partial to Celestial Seasonings Echinacea tea when I have colds/flu. It does not cure you but it seems to help with the symptoms anyway.

Glad you have some new mags to amuse you while you rest up.

Thanks for the link to the Adorn Blog, which I may have otherwise skipped. I learned some good stuff there! Now I have to see if I can get to NYC this Spring. (4 hours by Amtrak, but the fares are not cheap.)

Here's a rather fun site in trade: www.unsungdesigners.com

I may try to get to their store(in DC), open only on Saturdays. But I probably won't bother until our weather warms up.

I also wanted to tell you that I DID design an entry for the Ugly Betty Contest when you blogged about it. I kept tweaking it and we were leaving town the day of the deadline. It was a Sunday, and our scanner decided not to work! We think the bulb is just burned out. We did not have time to go to an office supply store before we had to get to the airport. I took my sketches, essay, etc with me, in hopes that the airport at either end might have a "business center" (no luck) and then also could not find an open store at our destination on a Sunday evening. (It now occurs to me that we could have tried using the digital camera!) Oh, well. It was fun doing the project anyway! I saw a bubble-wrap-skirted dress shown in the previews on Ugly Betty for next week so I guess that's what won. Bubble wrap seemed too obvious (but probably could be played for laughs- all that popping potential!) so I didn't use it except unseen - as a "crinoline", haha.

You mentioned yesterday that you received a Hancock's flyer. I haven't yet where I live and when I checked their website, there was no new one up for my zip code. Last one I received arrived VERY late - the day before all the sales and coupons were to expire and also when I was leaving town!!!

Spam: I heard on our news radio that spam is making a comeback because the spammers have figured out a way around some of the controls yet again.

Finally - Feel better, soon.

Hey Stacy, hope you are feeling better very soon, and enjoy a relaxing weekend! I have entered a couple of plushies in the Softie Awards 2007, so thanks for that link.
I too was shocked to hear about Anna Nicole. She was the subject of our morning discussions at Starbucks today. Sad story for sure.

Congratulations to everyone who was able to get a free subscription. I figure you can never have too many magazines... although, keep in mind our house has more than your standard doctor's office!

Bernadette - thank you for the link, I love that site! I've even added it to my feed reader. OOOOh, I wish you could have gotten you entry into the Ugly Betty contest - I would have loved to have known the winner!

Carrie - good luck on the Softie Awards!

As for the illness - well, I had to suck it up today. Bret's still out of town and Taylor had a birthday party to go to tonight. Thank goodness for Mucinex D!

Wow Stacy!

You must have found that link at Adorn just as they posted it because I won too! What are the chances that 4 of us would have entered in time?

Hope your feeling better.

psst maybe your Onions sill come today.......that will make it all better right? ;)

I was just saying the same thing to my husband this morning about Adorn. I'm crossing my fingers for Onions (the patterns, not the vegetable!).

Stacy - Thanks for the support, but I wouldn't have won - a bubble skirt made out of Bubble Wrap now seems like the OBVIOUS choice. HAHA. I wanted my dress to be kinda elegant; but funny is always better! It will be just a blip in the episode but someone will get a thrill! Maybe it IS someone you know, anyway! Winner's name will be on the ABC web site on 2/15/07. I think that is also the episode air date.

Hey Stacy!

I won the Vogue book too from cutting edge. As you know I made pillows inspired in some of their editions...That is a first for winning sewing stuff!
I missed the adorn, but I will try again next time (if there will be one, hehe)

Hi Stacy! Hope you're feeling better :) Thanks for the info on ONION patterns - have you made a bunch from them?

I tried for the ADORN mag. subscription, but didn't make it in time. Oh well... Let us know how the magazine is - I have an addiction to craft magazines :)

I finally broke down and placed my first Onion order and I'm anxiously awaiting my package! I've read a lot about them on Pattern Review and it seems like everyone is pleased with they way they sew up.

I really like Adorn magazine! I think that it's only had 2 issues released, but it's very trendy, has a little bit of everything in the issue, and a lot of it looks easy to make (even if you've never tried it).
