Oscar Night Fashions 2008
Not that I probably need to tell you, but the Oscars were last night. Like millions of other Americans, I didn't watch - in fact, I even missed the red carpet arrivals. After surfing the internet and scoping out the styles, I realized, I didn't miss much. Instead of re-hashing all the Oscar looks (which everyone seems to have done already), I'll just point you in the direction of some of the best places to gawk - EOnline and FabSugar (my personal favorite since you can vote for your favorite look). My favorite gown of the evening - Heidi Klum. How about you? [photo via FabSugar]

Dress For The Zoo
Eva Longoria recent spent a day at the zoo in this adorable dress (I've never worn a dress to the zoo, she's definitely a brave one!). Although the details are difficult to see (this is the best picture showing her wearing it), she's sporting a design similar to New Look 6696. Closeup photos show that her dress is made up of a raspberry cotton eyelet - perfect for spring. If you're looking for similar material, you may want to pop over to Fabric.com who has a very pretty red scalloped eyelet in stock.
Edited to add: It looks like the red eyelet is now gone!

Flirty And Flowy
With the writer's strike on a wind down, it's nice to see some awards shows popping up - there's nothing like checking out the celebrity formal wear. One dress that immediately popped out at me was Carrie Underwood's Zuhair Murad gown. It's dressy yet flirty and not over the top in design. If you're wanting to recreate this romantic look for yourself, check out Simplicity 3503 and either this gorgeous silk from Emma One Sock or this one in a beautiful floral print from Gorgeous Things. I can't wait for spring to finally arrive - sleeveless styles here I come! [photo via FabSugar]

Tartan Coat
I love coats and jackets. If I had enough room in my closet, I'd have one for every sort of occasion imaginable! That's why, when I saw a photo of Dita Von Teese attending a show for Fashion Week, I just had to add this number to my 'inspiration collection'. I'm thinking that McCall 5525, view E, looks fairly close (the belt would have to be changed, of course) - although, I'm sure the fit will be much different seeing that I do not have a 22 inch waist (16 when she corsets herself)! Diamonds Are Her Best Friend Too

Paris Hilton showed up to the premiere of her new movie The Hottie And The Nottie (I can't believe this isn't going straight to video) in what can only be described as a Marilyn Monroe knockoff (the pink dress made famous in her movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes). If you're thinking of making this strapless style for yourself, go with McCall 3385 or Simplicity 8393 - both are now out of print, but you may be able to score one off of eBay or a 'vintage' pattern site.
On a side note, I've made this one up for myself several years ago (I was Marilyn and Bret was Elvis for Halloween) - you can catch a glimpse of it here, who knew my costume would be so stylish? [photo via Yeeeah!]

JLo's Gown
It's rumored (once again) that JLo had her twins sometime Thursday. Normally, I won't talk about celebrity births, but reports are saying she had a couture hospital gown made just for the event. DearJohnnies makes custom gowns for $55-65 each, but now you can make your own for much less. LazyGirl has a free pattern that you can download and print from home so you can feel like a celebrity the next time you're delivering!

Now You Can Whisper To Ghosts Too
Jennifer Love Hewitt recently posed for promotional stills for her CBS show, the Ghost Whisperer. Not only does she look great, but her dress can easily be recreated using New Look 6644 (her dress color is even the same as the model on the pattern envelope). [photo via The Superficial]

Golden Globes We Missed You
Not only is the writer's strike causing some of our favorite shows to cease production and start running re-runs, but it also contributed to the disaster called the 2008 Golden Globes. Since celebrities banned together and decided not to attend the event, there were no beautiful gowns to gawk at, knock-off, and discuss the next day. Fortunately, People came up with "What Should the Stars Have Worn to the Golden Globes?" You can now scroll through and envision what your favorite celebrity might have worn. Let's cross our fingers that the Oscars don't get canceled, too - besides Britney sights, the celebrity style watch is getting sort of thin!

Knock It Off
Been eyeing some of those wonderful celebrity styles? Wanting to make you own knock-off, but just haven't found the motivation? Then here's something that might get your creative juices flowing - Pattern Review's Designer Knock-Off Challenge where the winner receives a $200 gift certificate to Textile Studio. This is definitely one of my favorite contests, but will undoubtedly sit this year out, there's just not enough designer maternity wear out there!

The Man Purse
Remember that Seinfeld episode where Jerry carries a 'purse' and claims,
"It's not a purse, it's European."
This is what celebrities must be saying because twice in the same week, I've seen (celebrity) men carrying what looks to be purses. First it was Robert Downey Jr. and today it's James Spader. Is this a new 2008 trend that I've missed or is this just another part of a weird celebrity get-up?

Keyhole Tunic
This isn't celebrity fashion, yet - I'm just waiting for Britney Spears to show up at some nightclub wearing this (with her hot pink wig, no doubt), but I couldn't resist talking about it. I first spotted this Brette Sandler Keyhole Tunic while surfing FabSugar and the horrible image has been burned into my brain since. It's meant to be worn as a swimsuit coverup, but I can see how some crazed celebrity will wear this out. Anyone want to take a guess who all might sport this number first? [photo via FabSugar]

Paris Goes Asian
Paris Hilton was recently in Shanghai for the MTV Style Awards. At one of the events, she wore this adorable Asian-inspired mini dress (the shoes were cute too, but I'll leave that up to Manolo's shoe blog to comment on those). If you're thinking of adding this little number to your holiday wardrobe, then start out with New Look 6203 - it's a dead ringer for Paris' latest style! [photo via Celeb Warship]

What's Happened With Celebrity Fashion?
It's been a rough few weeks for celebrity fashion. Sure there's been a few awards shows, movie premieres, and just random sightings, but honestly there hasn't been much that's caught my eye or even looked remotely similar to what most pattern companies have to offer. Last night was the American Music Awards - here's what FabSugar has picked out as their 'best dressed list.' What do you think? Personally, I loved the back of Kellie Pickler's dress (although I'm not a fan of the front). [Photo via Yeeeah]

Lady In Red
I'll admit, I didn't watch the CMA's last night. Apparently, I missed a lot of drama too... Performer Kellie Pickler sang "I Wonder," a song about her estranged mother, with tears streaming down her face (if you missed her performance you can catch the video here). Even though she may have broken down on stage, she still looked beautiful. I love the striking red dress she wore on stage which looks very similar to Vogue 2847 - right down to the color on the model! [photo via A Socialite's Life]

No Words Can Describe This Top
I'll admit it, I had to do a double (o.k. triple) take after seeing this photo of Kylie Minogue. What is she wearing on the cover of Q magazine? I know celebrities like to wear eye catching garments, but this one reminds me of those sexy lady aprons that you see in novelty stores. [photo via Celebrity Warship]

Gorgeous and Charitable
I've always liked Malcom in the Middle start, Jane Kaczmarek. I liked her even more after I found out she started a charitable organization called Clothes Off Our Backs - an internet site that auctions off celebrity garments and donates the proceeds to children's charities. Recently she attended the Fredrick's of Hollywood 2008 fashion show wearing this adorable dress. It looks a bit like McCall's new pattern (a Hillary Duff creation) 5512 without the over-sized neckline. I think what I like best about this dress is that she took what could have been a boring solid and is wearing a bold, striking print - I love it with this style! [photo via a Socialite's Life]

Celebrity Halloween
What do celebrities wear when they attend a Halloween party? Apparently some pretty elaborate costumes!

Terri Hatcher's Queen of Hearts costume is absolutely fabulous. Quite a few years ago, McCall's had a very similar pattern (now out of print) that I picked up. Still to this day I have yet to use it. However, after seeing someone in this fantastic garment, I may have to give it a whirl next year. Other celebrity costume sightings - Paris Hilton in what appears to be a sailor costume (no pattern found yet) and Marlee Matlin who makes a fabulous Captain Jack Sparrow (Simplicity 4923 would work for this costume).

Cheri's Chemise
Remember Cheri O'Teri? She was once a regular on SNL and I don't recall seeing her since she left the series - that is until today. Here she is at last night's Fredrick's of Hollywood 2008 fashion show (I hardly recognized her) wearing this cute sparkly number that looks an awful lot like Simplicity 3799. At the moment, I'm unable to locate a silver knit, but with the holiday's right around the corner, I'm sure that they will start popping up soon! [photo via A Socialite's Life]

Tyra's Toga
It seems as if almost all the celebrity photos I see anymore are of Britney Spears - and I really don't think we want to talk about her fashion style any more than what we have to. So instead, I present to you today's new fashion disaster, Tyra Banks. I guess the dress itself wouldn't be too bad if you were looking for something trendy, avant-garde, or toga-ish, but I have to ask, what's going on with that metallic decal over 1/2 of her chest? I love the bag, though. [photo via Celebrity Warship]

Where Did You Get That Coat?
As soon as I saw this photo of Rebecca Romijn, I said "WOW!" Not only does she look fabulous, but I'm in love with that blue coat she's wearing. I've done a bit of searching and haven't come up with a fabric that is a match (it has a bit of texture to it, so it may be harder to find than a plain wool coating), but I believe that Simplicity 4084 is a good start to making this style for yourself. With all these beautiful coats and jackets celebrities have been wearing lately, I could spend the eentire season sewing nothing but those up for myself!

Fans of Bravo's Project Runway, probably remember season two's episode where contestants were asked to design an ice skating outfit for silver medalist, Sasha Cohen (and who could forget that hideous design Santino came up with?). Spoilers
The new season of Project Runway hasn't hit the airwaves yet and spoilers are already floating around the internet. Here's the first one: The drama behind the new season and who gets the boot. I admit I was tempted to read on, however, I resisted as I don't want the whole season ruined already. Maybe I'll give in later on in the afternoon and sneek a peek!
Speaking of spoilers (which has absolutely nothing to do with sewing except for the fact I've been posting a lot of Carrie's wardrobe on the Celebrity Style Watch section of the site), here's a major spoiler coming from the set of Sex and the City the movie.

Beautiful Belted Top
I generally love the way Charlize Theron dresses and this outfit is no exception. At first glance, the top she's wearing reminded me of this Burda World of Fashion top (from the October 2007 edition) and is the closest that I've come so far in re-creating her belted version. Pair this top up with a sexy, slim skirt and you're ready to hit the town![photo via WENN]

Book of Style
If you can't wait until the new season of Project Runway starts, then you may want to check out Nina Garcia's new bookThe Little Black Book of Style. Not a book on fashion, instead this book promises to teach the reader how to dress their best. Apparently this is a book that more celebrities should read from themselves.

What's Going On With That Hem?
At first glance I really liked Teri Hatcher's dress. It's got a subtle sparkle and print to it and the style is very flattering - that is until I saw the bottom of the dress. Since I like the dress better without the hem treatment, I'm linking to a dress pattern that looks similar, but is simpler at the bottom! Vogue 8240. Pair this up with a shimmery brocade fabric from Fabric Mart or one of the beautiful prints from Gorgeous Fabrics and your dress is guaranteed to look better than this desperate housewife![photo via A Socialite's Life]

My Hero
With all the celebrities who are pregnant lately (Nicole Ritchie, Halle Berry, Isla Fisher, and possibly Pam Anderson???) my favorite one has to be Milla Jovovich. Why? Because this once itty-bitty model turned actress has gained over 70 lbs. during her pregnancy and is not only happy about her weight gain, but she looks fantastic! Since she's in maternity wear, I'm sure no one is interested in a pattern match to the dress she wore to her Resident Evil: Extinction premiere, so I'll leave you with something anyone can wear - Vogue 8386. This empire waist dress is not only easy to sew, but is flattering on everyone that I've seen make it up.... you can check out my version of this pattern here.

Bed Sheets?
There was another Sex and the City sighting and this time Sarah Jessica Parker's character, Carrie, was caught wearing what looks like a belted bed sheet. In fact, it reminds me of the Macy's commercial with Tim Gunn and Martha Stewart where he's thinking of making a cocktail gown from her linens (if you haven't seen the ad, you can check it out here). Also released today - plot spoilers! So if you're dying to find out what the big screen version of your favorite HBO show is all about, you can read about it on Page Six.[photo via WENN]

Vintage Dita
I have a confession to make. I love Dita Von Teese. She is one of the few people who, on a daily basis, wears retro style clothing - and wears it well. She's topped best dressed list several times, here's why:

Ok, so the last photo is of her performance at the Macy's Passport Gala, but look at all those crystals on her gown! Unfortunately, I haven't found patterns that are similar to the one's she's shown wearing here (I'm guessing because they are vintage or retro style knockoffs), but I'm working on it!

If Tim Gunn's new program, Guide To Style, isn't quite tiding you over on your Project Runway fix. then head on over to Bravo and meet the new cast of Season 4. Love A Designer?

Considering the garments Courtney Love has been wearing in public lately (see above), I'm not so sure I would buy anything from her upcoming clothing line. Yes, that's right Courtney Love is now a designer. I know at one point in time she had a fabulous wardrobe (back when she looked like this), but I'm not sure her current style is going to look anything similar to the 'classics' she was sporting 10 years ago.

It's All In The Details
Say you've purchased Simplicity 3692 and not sure how to change this pattern up to give it a different look. Why not turn to actress Arden Myrin for inspiration? Although it's similar in style, Arden's dress has quilted details along the neckline, sleeve and dress hems to give this design a fresh new feel. How cute!

Fashion And The City
Sex And The City is finally making it's way to the big screen. Since filming has already started in New York, there's been lots of photos released. I'm not so interested in the plotline so much as the clothes - checkout some of what they're wearing so far:

Way To Go Tara
Sometimes the clothes Tara Reid selects isn't something that I would wear in public. However, she recently wore this fabulous Missoni top and I've been drooling ever since. With a few modifications to the sleeves and hem length, Burda 7872 looks like a great match. Make this up in Emma One Sock's Missoni zigzag sweater knit and you've got yourself one stylish top!

What Happened Debra?
What a difference a few days makes. Take a look at the photo below:

After being named one of the best dressed attendees of the 2007 Emmy's, Debra Messing steps out to shop in a muumuu. I know it looks windy outside and that dress is billowing, but I can't imagine that this frock looks good even when she's inside. Sorry folks, I won't even attempt to look for a good pattern match for this one - it's definitely a 'what not to wear' garment. [photo via WENN]

Jessica's Jewels
After looking at all those Emmy gowns, it's nice to see some celebrities dress in something casual for a change. Take Jessica Biel, for instance, in her adorable empire waist tank. What I think sets this style apart from the numerous similar looks out there is the crystal neckline. If your looking for a similar detail, be sure to check out Kwik Sew 3418 which could be made up in a purchased trim or created by using a hot fix rhinestone applicator. I love Jessica's look so much it makes me want to crack out my rhinestone wand and get jeweling!

The Good, The Bad, And The Frumpy
With the 2007 Emmy awards underfoot, it's time to talk about the fashions! I really thought that this year, with a few exceptions, everyone looked great. In fact, I had so many favorites, I had a hard time narrowing them down for this post. My winners:

Christina Agulera in her beautiful Valentino gown (who could tell she's pregnant in this?) and Heidi Klum in her couture Christian Dior dress. I saw the interview she gave to E! where she said she designed her own jewelry to go with this ensemble. Fabulous!

My next round of favorites would have to be Portia De Rossi and Ellen DeGeneres. They always look so coordinated and Portia's dress is stunning (not to mention they both look fantastic in navy). Minnie Driver is also a standout in this year's Emmy's with her golden wrap dress. After doing a bit of surfing, I found that the bodice of Vogue 8150 may be a close match for her style.
Not everyone on the red carpet looked fabulous, however. Unfortunately, there were some who looked nice, but just plain frumpy:

The hands down winner in the frumpy category has to be Hayden Panettiere. Somewhere underneath that empire waist has to be a body.... this was something I expected Christina Agulera to wear, not this tiny teen. Next up, Marcia Cross. The dress overall isn't horrid, but those triangles pointing her her midriff just seems to say "Look at my stomach, I just had twins earlier this year." Lastly, there's Conchata Ferrell. I would really like to tell her that just because you're full figured doesn't mean you have to hide your shape under loose and baggy dresses. Instead of looking like she's wearing a gown, Conchata looks like she's wearing a sparkling choir robe.
And then there were those dresses that left something to be desired:

Ok, actually I could only really come up with one - Vanessa Williams. Her gown reminds me of Penelope Cruz's Oscar gown - too many feathers. Both Jenna Fischer and Jaime Pressly should probably be bumped up to the "frumpy" category instead.
In my opinion, the Emmy dress most easily recreated by a mainstream pattern:

Debra Messing's Ralph Lauren gown. It's almost a dead ringer for Vogue 2930, don't you think?
Alright, so enough of my ramblings. Who were your favorites or least liked designs?

Emmy Night
Tonight is one of the biggest celebrity fashion events of the year - The Emmy's. In just a few short hours, we can all watch some of the biggest names in television model their gowns (good and bad) on the red carpet. Here's just a few ways to see the dresses before the actual show:
Eonline - you can watch all the arrivals live on E! along with interviews and commentary or check their blog for up the minute reports. They are also quick to update their website with photos.
TV Guide - yes, that little weekly paper magazine has grown up and moved on to the high tech world of internet reporting. You can see all the photos here or their live version if it's available in your area.
AOL - you no longer have to have an account to enjoy some of AOL's content. They'll be posting photos along with the winners as soon as they come in.
In Style - They intend on covering not just the red carpet arrivals, but the pre and after parties!
Stay tuned tomorrow where I'll post some inspiration dresses (and some of the worst dress too).

Death Becomes Courtney Love

This post isn't so much about what Courtney Love is wearing clothing wise (although her pants are wayyyy too low), but more whats in her eyes! I love the idea of colored contacts, but Courtney already has beautiful blue eyes without the enhancement. In fact, this new accessory of hers makes her look like Goldie Hawn's character in Death Becomes Her, don't you think? The moral of this story, watch changing you eye color or you could look freakish. [photos via WENN and MovieScreenshots]

Love Angel Music Baby
So what does the woman on the leftt have to do with Celebrity Fashion? She's modeling one of the designs from Gwen Stefani's latest L.A.M.B. collections. Last week Gwen showed her line at Fashion Week and received a standing ovation (Vogue has photos of her entire collection here). This jacket was one of my favorites - although it would require some modifications Vogue 2873 is a good stepping off point to re-create this look (from there length would have to be added, eliminate a pocket, shorten the sleeves).

Reese's Secret Buckles
Not that it ever goes out of style, but I've been seeing lots of Little Black Dresses on the red carpet lately. One of the best I've seen this month, Reese Witherspoon. What sets her dress apart from others are the details - the upper portion of the dress itself is trimmed in patent leather and the sides have these fantastic buckles (not to mention the pockets, I love dresses with pockets!). There are a few patterns that would be a good basis for creating this dress - probably your best bet would be Vogue 2237, but Vogue 7848 or McCall 5467 (View A) might work just as well. If you're looking for real skins and leathers to work with on this one, I've found the Fabric Mart has been carrying quite an assortment lately (their stock rotates quickly so what may be there one day may be gone the next!).

Best and Worst of VMAs
So who caught MTV's Video Music Awards show last night? I had good intentions of watching the program - of course I wanted to see Britney's opening act since this was supposed to be her 'big comeback' since shaving her head and a stint in rehab (did anyone else think her lip-sync and dancing was horrible?), too bad I missed the big fight between Kid Rock and Tommy Lee. So enough about the show, what about the fashions? One of my favorites had to be Mary J. Blige - how stunning does she look in her LBD?
Another winner (in my humble opinion) was Hayden Panettiere's blue satin number. Shiny can pinpoint a person's imperfections, bulges, and blemishes but this style looks fun and fantastic on her (and I love the color).
I've read several blogs this morning that have either loved or hated Rosario Dawson's dress. For some, the sequins (apparently found on the side of her dress) and the leather piping was a bit too much for their taste, but remember it's the VMAs - and this dress is so toned down in comparison to what it could have been (say all leather?). Personally, I think she looks fabulous, but I'd hate to be wearing this number all night - it looks uncomfortable.
An honorable mention has to go out to Paris Hilton - while I didn't care too much for the leopard print dress (I certainly couldn't wear it myself, but it works for her), her hair looks AMAZING! In fact, I love it so much, I'm thinking of getting my hair cut like this the next time I go see my stylist!
Of course with every awards program, premiere, or social gathering, there are always those that make the 'worst dressed list'. I think the clear winner of the VMAs should be this woman - we'll just call her Bo Peep.
If you're interested in seeing more fashions from MTV's big even, you can check out their Red Carpet photos here.

Fashion Rocks, or Does It?
Last night was the big Fashion Rocks event at Radio City Music Hall (it can be seen on CBS tonight). According to A Socialite's Life, not only did the program leave something to be desired, but so did the clothes (be sure to check out Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Richie, Avril Lavigne, Steven Tyler, Terri Hatcher, as well as a host of others they have posted on the site). My personal favorite, Jessica Alba. I love this dress - it's simple, elegant, and that chain across the bust is a great accent piece. But then again, when hasn't Jessica looked fantastic lately?[photo via WENN]

What A Back!
I don't watch the Laguna Beach, so I'm not really familiar with Lauren Conrad, but when I saw a photo of her in this dress, I just knew I had to blog about her. Lauren's dress is one of those that look oh so 'conservative' from the front, but when she walks away from you, Wow! If you have a beautiful back that you're looking to show off, you may want to try Vogue 1944 (view A) - it doesn't have as dramatic of a cowl as our starlet's dress, but it's definitely sexy!

Amanda Bynes
Taylor has been a huge fan of Amanda Bynes ever since she had her own show on Nickelodeon. Back then, it was obvious someone was dressing her for the program because they put her in the craziest combinations of clothes (I think that they might have been trying to make her look fun or just funny for her variety show), but now that she's on her own, look how cute she is! I love this casual t-shirt style dress that Amanda recently wore to TRL. Since this is such a simple pattern, there's lots of options - Simplicity 3692, McCall 9172, Kwik Sew 2627, or even a modification of your favorite t-shirt pattern would work for this one. Pair this one up with a stripe 'butter' jersey from Gorgeous Fabrics and you'll look as adorable as Amanda!

Help Needed
Someone please help Britney Spears. I'm really not trying to turn into a Go Fug Yourself type site, but every time I see Brit out anymore, she's wearing something that's not meant to be worn as a top. Take the example at the left. Is that a skirt? It appears that she didn't even bother to zip up the side! And what's with the no pants and skimpy 'tops'? [photo via celebutopia]

Angelina's LBD
I'm very sorry that I had to crop Brad Pitt out of the photo on the right, but what I really wanted to show you was the dress that Angelina Jolie wore in Venice. I love little black dresses - I especially like the fabric in this one! If I had to make a dress like Angie's myself, I might use Vogue 8285 and this beautiful Italian embroidered lace from Emma One Sock. Now how can I get Brad to be my escort? [photo via celebutopia]

Demi's Top
You don't see much of Demi Moore these days, but when you do, I'm always interested in looking what she's wearing (I think her style is a bit unpredictable). Take this top that she's wearing on a recent visit to the set of Ashton Kutcher's new movie - it's adorable, breezy, and oooh so comfy looking. The short sleeved version of Simplicity 4020 would would work perfect for this style. Match this top up with a pair of skinny pants and you've got yourself a hot look! [photo via imnotobsessed.com]

OOPS!
This morning's post is a little bit sewing and a little bit celebrity fashion all wrapped into one - of course the title of today's entry says it all. You see Britney Spears walked out of her house looking like this yesterday - BIG OOPS. I know it's sometimes difficult to tell if those tunic style tops are supposed to be worn with pants or they are supposed to be a mini dress, but Brit, if your cheeks are hanging out, it's a top! [photo via DailyMail]
So now for my OOPS. Yesterday I posted about the progress of my Jalie V-neck top. I was so worried about matching the pattern for this particular garment that I neglected to read the pattern layout or the pattern itself to realize that I needed to cut a 'lining' for the front bodice. And here I thought it would be smooth sailing from here on out. Needless to say, today I'll be working on the lining for this top today!
Have any recent OOPS you'd like to share?

It's A Wrap For Keira
I love wrap dresses. They're comfortable, stylish, and they look great on almost everyone who wears them. Keira Knightly is no exception! Check out this summery version she has on here - it looks exactly like New Look 6697! The fabric is a bit more difficult to replicate, but SewZanne's has a beautiful butterfly and floral knit in about the same color that should work just as nicely!
