Giving It Another Go

I decided now that my jacket is complete, I need to focus back onto my Burda Easy Fashion magazine. I would really like for the tunic top to work out, so this time I traced the smallest size (last time I made the 36) and am eliminating the seam allowances. I'll be making another muslin to test this out!

If I can get this pattern to work, then I'm planning on doing these pants in linen.

I also saw that Emma One Sock is getting more buttermilks in this weekend! I'm going to have to sift through my Burda Wold of Fashion magazine to look for more top ideas.

I Had A Dream

I had a really weird dream last night and in it, I was making my wrap dress (seriously!). I thought that was a sign that I should start on this pattern today.

So, I traced the pattern and started cutting into my fabric. After cutting a few pieces, I realized that this fabric is WAY too busy for me. It might not be so bad, but the design is too small and you've got it going in several different directions. I think that the whole wrap look would be lost in this fabric. Without any new fabric to cut into, I decided to focus on my Ready To Wear knockoff - the Anthropologie inspired Sea Bee Capris and Geranium Sweater Jacket.

I got the capris cut and mangaged to just barely squeeze out enough fabric for this pattern. I think that the denim must have shrunk quite a bit when I washed them. I also cut the pattern out for the jacket. I've been mentally preparing how I'm going to make this one - I think the best thing to do with the wide red band in the middle is to directly place it on top of the jacket instead of cutting the pattern apart and inserting it. I'm going to set it aside for the night and think about it some more.

Tunic Muslin

After reading a bit on Pattern Review about some of the tops in Burda Easy Fashion, I thought that I had better make a muslin for the Tunic Top before I cut into my pretty Emma One Sock onionskin. Good thing I did, here's my results:

Since the onionskin fabric has stretch, I eliminated the zipper. As you can tell from the picture, this top is entirely too large. Not only does this top create a droopy boob look, but the neckline is huge, as well as the sides, etc. In short, this top is too big and just looks horrible on me. I don't feel like playing with this pattern at the moment, but I'm considering going down two sizes if I try this out again.

I also like the shorts the model is wearing in this view too. I tried on a pair of cargo bermudas at Old Navy the other day (they remind me of the Burda pattern) and I realized, you might as well call me Frodo because I look like a hobbit in them. I'm gathering that bermudas are made for taller people than I, or else everyone is going to look as dorky as I did this summer when they are wearing these shorts. Needless to say, I'm crossing this project off my list until I see someone else review this pattern.

The Wrap Dress

Diane von Furstenberg made the wrap dress famous in 1976 - and it's still holding strong today. Occasionally, you can find her patterns on Ebay (for a small fortune), but since I'm not willing to pay hundreds of dollars for a pattern, I'll just knock it off!

For this knock off, I'm going to use another Burda Easy Fashion pattern. Emma One Sock had a beautiful silk print that I wanted to use, but the total price was over $70 and I just couldn't bring myself to spend that much on a dress right now (instead I spent $40 dollars for 3 different prints, plus shipping). So, I settled on some fabric that I found at Joann's today. It's a slinky, stretch print in black, white and orange. I think that it will look perfect for this dress and it's so bright orange that I don't have to worry that hunters will shoot me.

Tiered Skirt Added

I added Burda's Easy Fashion tiered skirt to the project sidebar tonight. I worked on this today and managed to complete it tonight! I had all the pieces cut out and ready to go - all in all, it went together very fast. I even inserted the invisible zipper without any problems.

I used fabric from my latest Fabric Mart print bundle - almost 3 yards of a wild looking (but pretty) border print. Originally, Taylor had claimed this, but after seeing the tiered skirts in the Burda magazine, I knew I had to use this fabric. Incidently, the pink fabric that I'm using for the Burda 8053 top matches the pink in this skirt - so I suppose this will have to be one of my next projects to start on.
